Ways to help Haiti Earthquake Victims

Thomas(Tom) --

On Tuesday, a catastrophic earthquake struck near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but the death toll -- already in the thousands -- is climbing fast.

This is the worst earthquake to hit the area in more than 200 years. Entire communities have been ripped apart and as many as 3 million people have been directly affected, including tens of thousands of American citizens who are in Haiti.

Our neighbors in Haiti are racing to confront the enormous devastation -- and the OFA community can help.

Click here for more information about essential relief efforts and ways you can help today.

Footage is pouring in of homes collapsing, Haitians carrying injured family members, and hospitals being overrun in what was already the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.

I have directed my administration to respond with a swift, coordinated, and aggressive effort to save lives. Personnel from the United States and our partners in the international community are on the ground in damaged areas right now, working side by side with the Haitian people. They're providing much-needed food, water, and sanitation supplies, saving lives and helping local communities start to rebuild.

Despite the fact that we are experiencing tough times here at home, I encourage those who can to reach out and help. It's in times like these that we must show the kind of compassion and humanity that has defined the best of our national character for generations.

As this story continues to unfold, I hope you will continue to keep the people of Haiti in your thoughts and prayers, as well as the many Haitian-Americans who have done so much to enrich our country and who are worried about friends and loved ones in this time of need.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

Message From US President Obama

Good Afternoon,

The reports and images from Haiti of collapsed hospitals, crumbled homes, and men and women carrying their injured neighbors through the streets are truly heart-wrenching. As we learn more about the extent of the devastation, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti and Haitian Americans around our country who do not yet know the fate of their families and loved ones back home.

I have directed my Administration to respond with a swift, coordinated and aggressive effort to save lives. The people of Haiti will have the full support of the United States Government in the urgent effort to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble and to deliver the humanitarian relief -- the food, water and medicine -- that Haitians will need in the coming days.

This is also a time when we are reminded of the common humanity that we all share, and Americans have always responded to these situations with generosity of spirit. If you would like to support the urgent humanitarian effort in Haiti, I encourage you to visit our website where you can learn more about how to contribute:

http://www.WhiteHouse.gov/HaitiEarthquake

Americans trying to locate family members in Haiti are encouraged to contact the State Department at (888) 407-4747.

We will continue to stand with the people of Haiti and keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

IRS Announces Standard Mileage Rates for 2010
I am dissapointed that they did not increase the mileage deduction for Charitable purposes
but we take what the IRS give'th.

Issue Number:    IR-2009-111

Inside This Issue

IRS Announces 2010 Standard Mileage Rates

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today issued the 2010

optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating

an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2010, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car

 (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:

  • 50 cents per mile for business miles driven
  • 16.5 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations

The new rates for business, medical and moving purposes are slightly lower than last year’s.

The mileage rates for 2010 reflect generally lower transportation costs compared to a year ago.

The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs

of operating an automobile. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs

 as determined by the same study. Independent contractor Runzheimer International conducted the

study.

A taxpayer may not use the business standard mileage rate for a vehicle after using any depreciation

method under the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) or after claiming a Section 179

deduction for that vehicle. In addition, the business standard mileage rate cannot be used for any

vehicle used for hire or for more than four vehicles used simultaneously.

Taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather

 than using the standard mileage rates.

Revenue Procedure 2009-54 contains additional details regarding the standard mileage rates.

Health Care Reform

Please Read and Contact your Senators to support
Health Care Reform

Now, the Senate‏

On Wednesday night, Senate leadership unveiled their final health reform package. It's a great bill that accomplishes President Obama's core goals for reform: provide more security for those who have insurance, guarantee affordable coverage options for those who don't, and rein in the cost of care for American businesses and families.

And it accomplishes all of this while reducing the deficit by as much as $777 billion over the next 20 years.

Now, we're in the final sprint toward reform, and the next challenge is already here.

Today, senators are listening carefully to see how constituents react to the bill and how we want them to proceed. So it's our job to make sure they hear quickly and unmistakably: Move forward!

On Saturday, the Senate faces a close vote on whether or not to begin debate, so it's critical to weigh in right away. Click here to call Georgia's senators now.

Please call:

Sen. Saxby Chambliss
at 202-224-3521
Sen. Johnny Isakson at 202-224-3643

(Not your senators? Click here to look yours up.)

Just tell whomever answers the phone where you live and that you support the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act -- and want the Senate to begin discussing it right away.

After you've called, click here to tell us how it went:

http://my.barackobama.com/SenateVote

Many senators have worked tirelessly to get us this far, and they deserve our thanks. But it is crucial that every senator knows that we are counting on them to stand up to the insurance industry and support reform -- and that we will be right there standing with them.

We're getting so close, and your incredible work is a big part of why we've been successful so far. Let's keep it up and get this job done.

Thanks,

Mitch

Senate Committee Releases Health Care Legislation

On September 16, Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, introduced "America's Healthy Future Act".  Baucus' health care legislation, estimated to cost $774 billion over 10 years, would require insurers to offer coverage regardless of preexisting conditions.  Those that have insurance will have the option of keeping their current coverage.  Additionally, the legislation would:
  • Mandate that individuals have health insurance with certain exemptions including hardship and religion;
  • Call for an expansion of Medicaid to cover all people under 133 percent of the federal poverty level;
  • Provide a refundable tax credit for low and middle-income individuals on a sliding scale for individuals and families between 134-300 percent of FPL (Federal Poverty Level) to subsidize the purchase of health insurance;
  • Establish minimum benefits that include primary care and first‐dollar coverage for preventive services, emergency services, medical and surgical care, physician services, hospitalization, outpatient services, day surgery and related anesthesia, diagnostic imaging and screenings, including x‐rays, maternity and newborn care, pediatric services (including dental and vision care), prescription drugs, radiation and chemotherapy, and mental health and substance abuse services;
  • Prohibit plans from setting lifetime limits on coverage or annual limits on any benefits;
  • Establish out-of-pocket limits at least equal to the limits for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), which will be $5,950 for an individual and $11,900 for a family;
  • Create state-based web portals, or "exchanges" that would standardize options in the insurance market and allow consumer to easily compare and purchase available plans;
  • Establish health care cooperatives, a system of nonprofit, member-run health insurance companies (not create a government funded public option);
  • Assist certain Medicare beneficiaries in purchasing prescription drugs through Part D when they hit the coverage gap portion, or "donut hole" of the benefit;
  • Require states to provide children between Medicaid eligibility levels and at least 250 percent of FPL with wraparound coverage to supplement the core benefit package available through the exchange in 2013;
  • Require all employers with more than 50 employees who do not offer coverage to contribute based on the number of full-time employees receiving a health care affordability tax credit or the average exchange subsidy per total number of employees;
  • Provide a tax credit to small businesses that offer health insurance to their employees;
  • Levy a nondeductible excise tax of 35 percent on insurance companies and plan administrators for any health insurance plan that is above the threshold of $8,000 for singles and $21,000 for family plans;
  • Require federal health programs to collect data on race, ethnicity, gender and disability to address disparities among these groups in accessing quality health care;
  • Provide funding to states to develop and implement Home Visitation programs;
  • Make investments in policies that will promote healthy living and help prevent costly chronic conditions; and
  • Ensure rural health care facilities and providers have the resources they need to continue delivering quality care in their communities.
The Finance Committee will begin marking up its bill on Tuesday, September 22.  The bill is expected to be debated by the full Senate on September 29.
